About the Project

Reaching the Unreached

Prison inmates represent one of the most marginalized and vulnerable populations when it comes to HIV services. In 2014, with support from the AIDS and Rights Alliance of Southern Africa (ARASA), Umunthu Foundation launched a groundbreaking project to provide comprehensive HIV services within Malawi's prison system.

Project Highlights:

  • Over 60 inmates initiated on life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) at Ntcheu prison
  • Comprehensive testing and counseling services at Ntcheu and Nkhota-Kota prisons
  • Training of prison healthcare staff on HIV service delivery
  • Rights-based approach ensuring dignified care
  • Linkages to continued care upon release

Breaking Stigma

Prison inmates who received services expressed profound gratitude, with some performing traditional dances to celebrate their access to healthcare. This project proved that with commitment and partnership, even the most underserved populations can receive quality HIV care.
