Celebrating 19 Years of Umunthu: A Legacy of Hope and Healing
From Humble Beginnings to Lasting Impact
In 2006, a group of passionate social work activists led by David Odal recognized an urgent need in Blantyre communities. People living with HIV were walking over 7 kilometers to access basic testing and treatment services, facing not only distance barriers but also rampant stigma and discrimination.
What started with a single fundraising walk that raised MWK 35,000 has blossomed into a comprehensive healthcare organization operating three clinics, serving over 1,500 registered ART clients, and reaching thousands more through youth education and human rights programs.
