From Violence to Independence

For years, she endured domestic violence in silence. Like many women, she felt trapped – financially dependent, ashamed, and unsure where to turn. The physical bruises healed, but the emotional scars ran deep.

Finding Courage to Seek Help

A neighbor told her about Umunthu Foundation's human rights program and their work with gender-based violence (GBV) survivors. With fear and hope in equal measure, she reached out.

Umunthu Foundation's approach was immediate and compassionate. They provided crisis counseling to help her process the trauma. Through their partnership with the Victims Support Unit (VSU) at Bangwe Police Station, they connected her with legal support to understand her rights and options.

The Journey to Healing

The counseling sessions became her lifeline. Week after week, trained counselors helped her rebuild her self-esteem and recognize that the violence was not her fault. She learned about her legal rights as a woman and the protections available to her.

Umunthu Foundation connected her with safe shelter options and provided ongoing psychosocial support. They helped her develop a safety plan and linked her with economic empowerment opportunities.

Reclaiming Her Life

Today, she has left the abusive relationship. She started a small business selling vegetables at the local market, gaining economic independence. The confidence she once lost has returned.

She now volunteers with Umunthu Foundation, sharing her story (anonymously) to encourage other survivors. She participates in community awareness sessions about GBV, helping others recognize the signs and know that help is available.

Her Message to Survivors

"Umunthu Foundation did not just help me escape violence – they helped me understand my rights and rebuild my life with dignity," she says. "The counseling and legal support gave me strength I did not know I had. If you are experiencing violence, please reach out. You deserve dignity, safety, and respect."

Her story remains anonymous to protect her privacy and safety, but her courage continues to inspire others in similar situations to seek help and reclaim their lives.
