Empowered Through Knowledge: Patrick's Story
The Anti-AIDS Youth Club changed my perspective completely. Now I know how to protect myself, respect my body, and make informed decisions about my future. I am grateful for the confidence and knowledge I gained through Umunthu Foundation.
From Shy Student to Peer Educator
Patrick joined the Anti-AIDS Youth Club at his school when he was 15 years old. Like many young people, he felt uncomfortable discussing topics like HIV, sexual health, and relationships. But he was curious and wanted to learn.
Discovering the Youth Club
The Anti-AIDS Youth Club at Patrick's school was facilitated by volunteers from Umunthu Foundation. Through interactive sessions, games, and honest discussions, Patrick began learning about HIV transmission, prevention methods, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), and the importance of consent.
What made the biggest impact was the football coaching program. Umunthu Foundation, in partnership with Tackle Africa, integrated health education into football training. Patrick loved football, and learning about health while playing his favorite sport made the information stick.
A Complete Transformation
The more Patrick learned, the more confident he became. He realized how much misinformation existed among his peers. Many believed myths about HIV transmission or did not understand their rights regarding sexual health.
Patrick attended Youth Open Days organized by Umunthu Foundation, where he watched drama performances about GBV and participated in peer education sessions. These experiences opened his eyes to the challenges young women face and the importance of gender equality.
Becoming a Leader
Now 17, Patrick has become a peer educator himself. He leads discussions in his community, helping other young people understand HIV prevention, SRHR, and their rights. He has reached over 150 youth through his peer education sessions.
"The Anti-AIDS Youth Club changed my perspective completely," Patrick says. "Now I know how to protect myself, respect my body, and make informed decisions about my future. More importantly, I can help my friends make good decisions too."
His Vision for the Future
Patrick dreams of becoming a public health officer. He wants to continue educating young people and breaking down the stigma around HIV and sexual health. "Knowledge is power," he says. "When youth have accurate information, they can protect themselves and live healthy lives."
