About Us

Our History

“Umunthu” roughly translates as “I am because we are “. It is an ancient African humanist philosophy meaning ‘humanity to others’- focusing on people’s allegiances and relations with each other.

It is in this context that the name was chosen in order to meaningfully link it to the community targeted initiatives which the organization implements with a mission to improve the lives of others – the poor and marginalized communities in the areas of Democracy, Human rights, Good Governance, HIV/AIDS and food security.

Founded in 2004 in a response to complement with the government efforts in addressing the HIV/AIDS and Gender Based Violence challenges. It was then registered with the Government of Malawi under the Trustees Incorporation Act in October, 2006.

Over the last 10 years Umunthu Foundation has received funding and partnership support from Avert that has enabled us to grow into a solid trusted community organisation serving the people of Blantyre. As our partnership with Avert now comes to an end we are busy looking at new ways to widen out our income and look at new ways of raising money.

One of our biggest priorities is securing the salaries for vital staff positions that will ensure we can continue providing HIV testing and treatment services.
Thanks to Avert and Student Volunteers Abroad (SVA) for their instrumental parts in the growth of our organisation
